Diverse Approaches
Whilst it is possible to divide therapeutic approaches into three broad categories; Humanistic, Psychodynamic, and Behavioural, in practice many therapists are qualified in a number of approaches, allowing them to create unique therapeutic approaches and utilise interventions and techniques specific to the needs of the individual.
Below is a brief glance at some of the approaches that therapists at Therapy Chorlton have trained in, though there are many more than the handful introduced here. For more information, please speak to them directly.
Humanistic Therapy
This approach evolved from humanistic psychology, and holds that humans are inherently good and tend towards growth and improvement. Therapists in this paradigm believe that people are best approached in a holistic way, and rather than telling you what is wrong with you, they will help you find out what you want to change and help you do it. They will often take a non-expert position, putting all of their experience and knowledge at your disposal and working alongside you rather than directing or instructing you.
Transactional Analysis
A therapeutic modality that sits within the broader Humanistic approach, Transactional Analysis is a way of examining and understanding the communications and exchanges between people. It helps make sense of relationships, not just in the present but throughout our lives, and can help people understand how and why they feel and act particular ways in relationships. Through this, it helps people change and establish new ways of being with others, and let go of distress from the past.
Existential Therapy
This is often also considered a form of humanistic therapy. It is a philosophically-informed approach that recognises client's ability to make rational and choices and grow, whilst acknowledging the limitations imposed by one's individual environment, culture, economy and society. It is often used as a way of working therapeutically with anxiety, fear of death, uncertainty and the need for meaning in life.
Sex Therapy
This is an approach specifically focussed on helping with issues around sex, and more recently has grown to incorporate gender, sexual and relationship diversity, and intimacy in general. Sex therapists use a range of techniques, often including practical advice, alongside talking therapy to help people to reduce distress and unhappiness around sex and relational intimacy.
